Inside the Inner Voices: April Strelinger
The musical hit comedy First Date follows Aaron and Casey as they meet for a casual blind-date. The two quickly discover they are not alone as inner critics take on a life of their own. To gain a better understanding of the couples' inner voices, we sat down with April Strelinger (one of three inner critics) and learned a little more about her.
Where did you go to high school?
I grew up in St. Louis… I went to Incarna Word Academy (an all girls Catholic school).
Where did you go to college?
Marymount Manhattan College in New York. The same college as our director, Caroline.
What is your Zodiac sign?
What characteristic(s) of your Zodiac sign fit you?
I am fiercely independent and great at initiating new projects, but terrible at following them through to completion. I also am blunt and honest and have a great sense of humor.

Married…for 10 years!!
Have you been on a blind date?
If so, tell us about it. I went on one blind date when I lived in New York City. It was totally awkward and I vowed to never to it again but as my great-grandma used to say, “at least I got a free dinner.”
What was your most memorable first date?
The first date I had with my (now) husband. We crashed a wedding just to dance, ate ice cream and kissed in the rain. It was pretty epic. No wonder I married him.
What is your idea of the perfect date?
I don’t know if I could top my first date with my husband. However, if I had to choose I would say going for a hike. (I love to walk and talk!) And if all goes well, ending with a kiss that gives me “sparkles.”
What’s your best dating advice?
You are enough. Don’t try to be someone you aren’t. The right person for YOU is out there but you have to embrace who you are first.
What’s your biggest pet peeve on a date?
Do you believe in love at first sight? Why or why not
Kinda. I believe instant chemistry. That can get the ball rolling into love. But I think actual and real love is a process and requires attention and intention daily.
What are you most looking forward to when performing in First Date at Starlight Indoors?
Playing multiple characters. I play quite a range of women and finding the nuance in each of them is an awesome challenge.
What’s your favorite thing about Kansas City?
Exploring. This is my first time actually living here so checking out restaurants, shops, and yoga studios are my top priority!
