2016-11-04
CATEGORY: Broadway

Starlight Theatre is expanding its offerings for area Girl Scouts with two workshops designed specifically for Juniors and Cadettes. Created in collaboration with Girl Scouts of NE Kansas & NW Missouri Council staff, the workshops will allow girls to explore their Journeys and badge work in an active and memorable way under the direction of professional teaching artists.

Junior aMUSE and Playing the Past Workshop

Grades 4-5
Saturday, January 28, 10 a.m. to Noon

$14/girl

Enrollment is now closed for this workshop.

Starlight will host a theatre workshop to assist Juniors on their aMUSE Journey through fun and engaging activities. A professional teaching artist will lead girls in exploring positive female characters who defy stereotypes. During the workshop, girls will use these characters to work through some of the steps for the Playing the Past Badge. Teaching artists will guide the girls in designing costumes for their chosen characters, lead vocal and physical acting exercises to help them become various characters, and encourage participants to have fun while bringing their characters to life. The theatre arts are a great way to take the themes of the aMUSE Journey to the next level, allowing girls to actively explore new roles and characters by embodying the admirable traits of these individuals.

Cadette Public Speaking Workshop

Grades 6-8
Saturday, February 11, 10 a.m. to Noon
$14/girl

Enrollment is now closed for this workshop.

Starlight will host a theatre workshop to assist Cadettes in completing some of the steps for the Public Speaking Badge. A professional teaching artist will help girls find their inner performer and speak up through acting exercises and theatre activities. Girls will explore the themes of messaging they see and hear in traditional and social media; then, they will determine alternative messages to empower and enable positive qualities. During the workshop, girls will learn physical and vocal acting exercises and techniques to aid in finding confidence and using their voices to the fullest potential. They will use texts to rehearse how to bring a message to life through emotional expression, physical storytelling and audience connections. The theatre arts are a great way to help girls personalize the Public Speaking Badge requirements while supporting them in finding their voices.

These workshops are not intended to achieve all steps of the badges. Girl Scouts and Troop Leaders will be given the tools to complete the badge work on their own. Individual girls and full Troops may attend the workshops.

Registration for Juniors will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20. Registration for Cadettes will close at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3. Space is limited, so register early.
