2019-03-08 CATEGORY: Starlight
On this week’s episode, The Notebook is headed to Broadway, Fox eyes future jukebox musicals, Starlight has announced audition dates for Starlight STARS and STARS of Tomorrow, and The Music Man opens at the Kennedy Center.
'The Notebook' is coming to Broadway
Rumor has it that the Nicholas Sparks novel The Notebook is being made into a musical headed for the Great White Way. The 1996 best-selling book was first turned into a film in 2004 starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and follows the forbidden love story of Noah and Allie in 1940s South Carolina. While we don’t know when this new musical will take the stage in New York, we’ve been told that a producer from NBC’s hit drama series This is Us is set to write the book, and singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson is handling the music and lyrics. Also signed on are producing team members from Broadway hits like In the Heights and Avenue Q.

Fox Ponders Original Jukebox Musicals
After the success of Grease, A Christmas Story and Rent live, the broadcast network Fox is considering original jukebox musicals as future television events. Although executives aren’t releasing who they are considering featuring, they have said they’ve been in talks with numerous artists about creating live musicals featuring artists’ song libraries. Some of Broadway’s most popular jukebox musicals have been “Mamma Mia,” “Motown,” and the Tony-Award-winning hit, “Jersey Boys.” This year, Starlight has two crowd-pleasing jukebox musicals on the summer schedule - Beautiful, The Carole King Musical and the weekend special Rock of Ages.
Upcoming Student Auditions at Starlight
Audition information is now available at kcstarlight dot com for Starlight’s high school performance troupe, Starlight Stars, and middle school performance troupe, Starlight Stars of Tomorrow. Members of Starlight Stars and Starlight Stars of Tomorrow will gain experience in a variety of performance styles, network and take classes from industry professionals, perform at Starlight and throughout Kansas City, and are eligible to audition for future Starlight productions. These educational programs have prepared company members to pursue careers in the arts, with numerous alumni going on to perform on Broadway, across the country and abroad.
A Look at The Music Man at the Kennedy Center
A concert-version revival of The Music Man recently earned rave reviews for its six-day engagement at the Kennedy Center, with the New York Times calling it “exceptional.” Jessie Mueller, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Carole King in Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, led the cast alongside Broadway alum Norm Lewis and comedian Rosie O’Donnell in this concert-like production. The Music Man is one of three concert-like revivals planned for this season as part of the Broadway Center Stage series at the Kennedy Center. These concert-like productions are quick-turnarounds - two weeks of rehearsals and minimal stagings - but make for a delightful evening full of Broadway’s favorite tunes.
