Elton John to Produce Animated Film of 'Technicolor Dreamcoat'
Joseph will bring his technicolor dreamcoat to the big screen. According to a recent release, Elton John’s Rocket Pictures (which previously produced Gnomeo & Juliet) has acquired the film rights to Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice’s global hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Composer Lloyd Webber recently hinted that a movie adaptation was in the works. He broke the news about the Biblically-themed musical film while on BBC’s The One Show in December. Stating that "it is definitely happening."
Rocket Pictures plans to adapt the musical into an animated movie. Elton John will executive produce the film with Lloyd Webber and Rice, while Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish will produce.
“Joseph is one of the most popular musical experiences ever conceived,” Shaw said in a release. “We are excited about the huge potential of a contemporary animated version, and we’re thrilled to bring this to the big screen in partnership with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.”
Joseph, the first hit collaboration of Lloyd Webber and Rice, tells the story of the trials and triumphs of Joseph. The musical blends pop, country and rock into an uplifting tale containing much-loved numbers including “Any Dream Will Do,” “One More Angel in Heaven,” “Close Every Door” and “Go, Go, Go Joseph!”
No word yet on the films casting or release dates.
This summer Starlight Theatre will be staging the touring production ofJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and will feature Broadway stars Diana DeGarmo (Hairspray, Hair) as The Narrator and Ace Young (Grease, Hair) as Joseph.
