Broadway’s beloved hit Fiddler on the Roof is another perfect match for Starlight audiences this summer. On Starlight’s stage for the first time in a decade, this tale of family tradition at odds with societal change is another Top 10 pick in our annual survey.
Set in early 20th century Russia, dairyman and devoted father Tevye sets out to find appropriate husbands for his three eldest daughters – with the help of Yente, the matchmaker. With humor, warmth and honesty, audiences discover that the girls have ideas of their own! Breaking with tradition, the daughters refuse to accept their matches and, instead, are intent on marrying the men they love.
With favorite musical scores including “Matchmaker, Matchmaker,” “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” Fiddler on the Roof earned eight Tony Awards during its initial Broadway run of 3,242 performances from 1964 to 1970. Revivals followed in 1976, 1981, 1990 and 2004, earning a ninth Tony Award for Best Revival in 1990.
