The Dukes of September Rhythm Revue
Co-founder, lead singer and principle song-writer for the rock band Steely Dan, Donald Fagen began his solo career in 1982 with the debut album The Nightfly. In this album, Fagen emphasized the jazz-rock of Steely Dan by mainly producing R&B tracks. Fagen’s next solo albums followed sporadically with Kamakiriad in 1993 and Morph The Cat in 2006. Of recording Morph The Cat, Fagen noted, “I’m still kind of plugged into the Duke Ellington model – something akin to classical music – where you start with something, you develop it a little bit and stick with it. And when you get a groove going, time flies.”
Upon joining the Doobie Brothers in 1976, Michael McDonald contributed his deep, soulful baritone voice to the band’s funky, southern rock sound. When the band split in 1981, McDonald began a solo career when he signed on with Warner Brothers Records for his debut album If That’s What It Takes. McDonald’s solo career features a soulful sound that was merely touched upon during his days with Doobie Brothers. Since then, McDonald’s voice can be recognized in covers of the Motown and R&B hits “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”
Although his musical career is highlighted with the rock band Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs has developed a solid career as a solo artist. Scaggs recorded his first solo album Boz Scaggs in 1969 and has since then released 14 other albums. One of his most notable albums Silk Degrees (released in 1976) reached #2 on the U.S. charts and #1 in a number of countries across the world. The album features the soul-infused the single “Lowdown,” which hit the #3 spot on the pop chart. Scagg’s most recent project Speak Low (released in 2008) features tracks with a thick, smooth and romantic sound.
