Master Classes

Program Session(s): March 14-16 and March 21-23, 2017

Starlight Theatre is offering a series of Master Classes for students in grades 6-8 and 9-12 during the Kansas City area schools’ spring breaks. Students may attend one, two, or all three half-day Master Classes, each focusing on a different genre of musical theatre: “Golden Age,” “Contemporary,” and “Pop-Rock.”

The Master Classes will help prepare students for auditions and performance in each of these musical theatre genres. In each Master Class, a professional teaching artist will guide students as they discover the important skills and techniques needed to be successful in that specific type of musical theatre. Students will use solo and group pieces to explore each style, with an emphasis on vocal performances, as well as the movement and acting inherent in the music of each genre. Students will leave each Master Class with an awareness of the terminology and trends, audition songs for each genre, and an understanding of how to better prepare their voices to meet the wide-ranging demands of musical theatre.
