The culmination of the annual Blue Star program occurs each May under the stars at Starlight Theatre.
The Blue Star Ceremony, Starlight’s very own rendition of the Tony Awards, celebrates the talents and accomplishments of musical theatre students, instructors, and the many others who contribute to excellence in high school musical theatre in Kansas City and surrounding areas. The evening ceremony is free and open to the public. In May 2009, 1600+ theatre fans cheered for 44 participating schools, 100+ award nominees, and 23 award recipients.

Representatives from all Blue Star schools kick off the Blue Star Ceremony with a rousing opening number. The five schools nominated in the Blue Star category of “Outstanding Overall Production” perform one number from their school’s musical on the Starlight stage. The ten nominees for “Outstanding Actor or Actress in a Lead Role” share the limelight as they perform a specially created medley of Broadway songs from their respective productions.

Throughout the evening, guest presenters who are professionals in the musical theatre field call the outstanding achievers in each of 23 Blue Star program categories to the stage to receive their Blue Star Awards.
