2008 SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
Accounting – Two internships will be awarded in Accounting. A Co-op student will assist in all accounting functions at Starlight Theatre. Typical tasks will include payroll, accounts payable, daily bank deposits, revenue classification, assisting with financial reporting, and various other tasks as they arise. Concert/Rock the Light - This intern will assist the administrative, production and marketing staff in coordinating activities related to Starlight’s summer concert series and Rock the Light festival. Specific duties will include coordinating communications with Starlight partners and vendors, assisting in the creation and distribution of marketing materials, assisting with planning event-day activities, and assisting in the execution of event-day activities. Education – This intern will work with the Director of Education focusing on summer educational programming such as the Blue Star Program, Starlight STARS, Talk to the Animals Camp, workshops and other summer activities that arise as well as organization for fall programming. The ideal candidate will have experience working in theatre and in an educational environment, have excellent skills in organization, written and vocal communication and Microsoft Word. Events and Entertainment – The interns will assist the Epic Production team; specifically the Event Coordinator and Entertainment Producer, with various events on schedules, rental orders, event ideas and themes, onsite event coordination and rehearsal, and budgets. This internship will help you learn about the many aspects that go into coordinating an event from beginning to end. The interns will be exposed to coordinating the details of an event including scheduling deliveries, renting tables and chairs, coordinating the audio/visual and technical components, and bringing all of the entertainment and themes together. Group Sales – The student will work with Group Sales focusing on ticket sales for the 2007 Broadway season at Starlight Theatre. Duties will range from preparing for sales meetings and assisting/attending group sales meetings and pitches. Office duties will include administrative work for completing group sales (printing invoices, preparing ticket packages, faxing group catering menus, sending potential groups marketing materials). The student will also have the opportunity to demonstrate his or her best PR skills at the theatre - greeting the groups at performances, directing groups to the Applause Club and to backstage tours, and other on-site group sales duties. Horticulture – Interns will assist the Operations Management and Facility & Grounds Teams in establishing lush and elegant gardens throughout the Starlight Theatre Complex. As a part of the internship the student will develop and implement a design concept for a specific garden or area to enhance the beauty of Starlight for years to come. On a daily basis duties within this internship may include (but are not limited to): annual and perennial flower bed design, planting and maintenance of gardens, soil testing, pruning, transplanting, propagation, fertilizing, chemical selection and application, irrigation maintenance, lawn care, and other general green-industry tasks. Marketing – The intern will work with the Marketing Department focusing on the 2008 Broadway season at Starlight, as well as other marketing initiatives for educational programs (Blue Star Awards), and special events such as the annual Gala fundraiser. Duties will range from assisting in the mass media efforts, creative development and production for the 2008 Broadway creative campaign, drafting email copy, and assisting with general preparation for the summer season. The intern will have an opportunity to lead development and execution of at least one special promotion/event supporting Broadway ticket sales. Operations – Interns will assist the Director of Operations and Operations Management in all phases of operations at Starlight Theatre’s facility. Typical duties may include scheduling, managing budgets, acquiring bids from sub-contractors for various projects, ordering and picking up parts and supplies, and managing our security badge system. They will also assist in identifying and correcting potential safety issues, learning the functionality of our parking, security and food service operations, supervise housekeeping crews, and various other tasks as they arise that will enhance the “Guest Experience.” This student must be majoring in Business Management, Construction Management, Facility Management, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Safety Management or related major. Production
Directing/Musical Directing – It is crucial that this intern have past musical training experience. Duties include duplicating music, note taking, writing orchestra parts, attending rehearsals, and most importantly, working with the director and musical director for each produced show.
Stage Management – This intern will assist in preparation of all rehearsal spaces, work on necessary paperwork that is generated by stage management and will assist in other areas of production as well.
Lighting – This internship involves working with the lighting designer and electricians. Duties include hands on training with the Master Electrician, learning the lighting system, assisting with cue-overs and creating cue sheets. Many evenings are required for this internship.
Production Management – Two internships will be awarded in Production Management. The interns will assist the Production Management team with various schedules, coordinate and oversee the local talent, and assist with paperwork. This is a very fast paced internship with a lot of exposure to the many different elements of Starlight Theatre.
Sound – The two main duties of this internship include working with the designer on making/editing sound cues and running the sound system for the pre-show entertainment. Other duties include assisting and observing the installation of the sound system, working with the microphones, and often helping with sound related errands.
