Horticulture/Facilities Technician

General description

The Horticulture/Facilities Technician position assists with managing all of the physical grounds, greenhouse, green spaces, and general vegetation of the venue, as well as is assisting with restoring the venue to tip-top shape after an event, setting the facility for the next event and day-to-day maintenance.

Essential Functions

Horticulture duties include, but are not limited to:

  • In cooperation with the Horticultural Supervisor, assess short and long-term annual assessments of horticulture needs.
  • Performs tasks associated with Horticulture, Arboriculture, Turf management, Landscape design, and Hardscapes.
  • Maintaining the clean, safe, reliable and efficient operation within the 16+ acre venue.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and compliance with building code, fire code, ADA, EPA standards, etc.
  • Troubleshoot all equipment problems and failures, calling on external partners when necessary to resolve any issues.
  • Identify, ensure, and/or supervise equipment is fully operational by performing routine preventative maintenance; Cleaning of tools, equipment, and machines to avoid critical downtime.
  • Performs regular grounds maintenance by mowing with riding or push mower; Trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, annual flowers beds, sidewalks, and buildings with weed eater; Sod replacement, over seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, pre and post emergent herbicide applications and IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program or chemical controls of insects.
  • Assists with waste and recycling collection, separation, and removal.
  • Assists with snow removal within the boundaries of the venue.
  • Performs greenhouse and landscaping functions; Transplanting, shearing, weeding, pruning, cleaning, clearing, and amending annual and perennial flower beds, trees, and shrubs.
  • Assembles, sets up, adjusts, and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as being proactive in reporting and/or addressing any deficiencies.
  • Movement of and delivery services for supplies, materials, and equipment from offsite locations to venue placement.
  • Comply with all policies for the safe storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Participate in ongoing technical, safety, and operational process training and development programs.
  • Generally does not exercise supervision of others, however may be required to supervise student workers (Intern), seasonal employees, and/or volunteers for short periods of time.

Facilities duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preventative and routine maintenance (painting, plumbing, light carpentry, small engines, etc.).
  • General facility cleaning (including power washing, scrubbing, fire hosing and sanitizing).
  • Event setup and breakdown.
  • Comply with all policies for the safe storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Comply with all safety procedures, maintaining good housekeeping and safety of all work areas; recognize danger and safety hazards and propose methods to eliminate them.
  • Participate in ongoing technical, safety and operational process training and development programs.
  • Respond effectively to emergencies as may be required.
  • Provide any other assigned operational tasks, as may be required to effectively maintain a safe, efficient and comfortable work environment for all building and venue occupants, guests and vendors.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to operate electrical and/or gasoline powered equipment.
  • The cultivation and propagation processing of ornamental plants and flowers.
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Extremely organized and focused with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities.
  • Awareness of basic safety/risk management procedures.



  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of horticulture/grounds keeping experience.
  • Experience in venue operation is preferred.
  • Knowledge of sprinkler systems and inspections.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to move and/or lift up to 50 pounds sometimes for one hour at a time
  • May need to crawl, crouch, balance, stoop or kneel.
  • May need to be able to work on stairs, at heights of 85’+, in confined spaces, in water and in all weather conditions.
  • Willing to work a demanding schedule in excess of 40+ hours per week including evenings, weekends and holidays.

Work Environment

  • Must work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions (-10 degrees to 110 degrees F) including rain, snow, ice, and wind.
  • Environments ranging from silent to extremely loud (<35 to >115dB)
  • Work often requires wearing or using safety equipment and/or protective gear.
  • Will be working on, around or near moving equipment, machinery, combustible, flammable, toxic or caustic substances.
  • The nature of the work environment may produce moderate levels of stress.
