A Big Month Ahead for Andrew Lloyd Webber
2018-03-05 CATEGORY: Starlight
As Andrew Lloyd Webber prepares to turn 70 on March 22, he shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, the acclaimed composer might as well consider the entire month of March a celebration of his contributions to Broadway.
First off is the March 6 release of his new memoir, Unmasked. According to a recent story in Parade magazine, in the “tell-all book, the iconic composer opens up about everything from his middle-class childhood in London to the inspiration behind smashes such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats and The Phantom of the Opera.”
Then, at 9 p.m. CDT on March 28, NBC will air an hour-long special, “Andrew Lloyd Webber: Tribute to a Superstar” in celebration of the artist’s milestone birthday. The special will feature Lloyd Webber in conversation with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Glenn Close and John Legend.
Four days later, on Easter Sunday April 1, Legend will star in the title role of NBC’s newest live musical spectacular, “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” The three-hour live event also stars Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene and Alice Cooper as King Herod. The groundbreaking television event is produced by Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Marc Platt, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
The original rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, with music by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Rice, took Broadway by storm when it debuted in 1971.
If a memoir, TV special and live TV performance of one of his most lauded productions don’t fully satisfy your craving for Lloyd Webber’s work this year, you’re in luck – his newest Broadway musical spectacular, Love Never Dies, is coming to Starlight this summer! In town for six performances Aug. 14-19, Love Never Dies is a spellbinding sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. The story picks up 10 years after the Phantom’s disappearance from the Paris Opera House and finds him now living among the freak shows and thrill rides of New York’s Coney Island.
Single tickets to Love Never Dies and Starlight’s other seven Broadway shows in the 2018 summer season go on sale April 2.
