Sing Street to Become Stage Musical
The creators of the Tony Award-winning musical Once have reunited to bring another John Carney film to the stage. Sing Street - the 2016 coming-of-age film about a group of Irish teenagers who start a band, won over critics when it was first released, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. Opening at New York Theater Workshop next season, the stage adaptation of Sing Street will be directed by Rebecca Taichman, who won a Tony Award in 2017 for her work on Paula Vogel’s Indecent, and choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, who has recently been working on Moulin Rouge! The Musical, slated to open on Broadway later this year.
Ryan Murphy Staging Netflix Movie Adaptation Of Broadway Musical The Prom
The Prom, the new musical that’s been nominated for seven 2019 Tony Awards, is already poised for two adaptations in addition to the show currently running on Broadway. First, Ryan Murphy, creator of the hit musical-comedy television series Glee, has announced that he will shepherd The Prom to a film version on Netflix. And earlier this spring, Viking Children’s Books confirmed that the musical’s writers are partnering with young adult author Saundra Mitchell for a book version to be released later this year. The Prom tells the story of Emma, a young woman who just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, when she gets thrown in to the center of a media frenzy in her fight against injustice.
Back to the Future The Musical is Coming to London
Nearly thirty-five years after the original film premiered, Back to the Future is finally set to make its screen to stage premiere at the Manchester Opera House in early 2020. The musical’s book is written by the original 1985 comedy’s co-writer, Bob Gale, and the show will be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando--known for his work on Urinetown and On the Town. The show is already eyeing the West End, and although a theatre is yet to be confirmed, we’ll let you know updates as soon as we have them.
