On this week’s episode, the 2019 Blue Star Award winners have been announced, to open at New York Theatre Workshop, The Prom has two adaptations in the works and Back to the Future is about to fly to the stage.


And the 2019 Blue Star Award Winners Are…

On Thursday, May 23, the much-anticipated 2019 Blue Star Award winners were announced in a Tony-Awards-inspired ceremony at Starlight. Raymore-Peculiar took home the award for Outstanding Overall Production for its performance of The Robber Bridegroom, as well as three additional awards. Blue Springs senior Sam Aubuchon took home the award for Outstanding Actor in a Lead Role for his portrayal of Terry in Side Show, and Shawnee Mission East Janie Carr took home the award for Outstanding Actress in a Lead Role for her portrayal of Ariel in Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Aubuchon and Carr will now travel to New York City to represent Kansas City in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards.Congrats to all of the winners and nominees!

Sing Street to Become Stage Musical

The creators of the Tony Award-winning musical Once have reunited to bring another John Carney film to the stage. Sing Street - the 2016 coming-of-age film about a group of Irish teenagers who start a band, won over critics when it was first released, and was nominated for Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy at the 74th Golden Globe Awards. Opening at New York Theater Workshop next season, the stage adaptation of Sing Street will be directed by Rebecca Taichman, who won a Tony Award in 2017 for her work on Paula Vogel’s Indecent, and choreographed by Sonya Tayeh, who has recently been working on Moulin Rouge! The Musical, slated to open on Broadway later this year.

Ryan Murphy Staging Netflix Movie Adaptation Of Broadway Musical The Prom

The Prom, the new musical that’s been nominated for seven 2019 Tony Awards, is already poised for two adaptations in addition to the show currently running on Broadway. First, Ryan Murphy, creator of the hit musical-comedy television series Glee, has announced that he will shepherd The Prom to a film version on Netflix. And earlier this spring, Viking Children’s Books confirmed that the musical’s writers are partnering with young adult author Saundra Mitchell for a book version to be released later this year. The Prom tells the story of Emma, a young woman who just wants to take her girlfriend to the prom, when she gets thrown in to the center of a media frenzy in her fight against injustice.

Sing Street to Become Stage Musical

Nearly thirty-five years after the original film premiered, Back to the Future is finally set to make its screen to stage premiere at the Manchester Opera House in early 2020. The musical’s book is written by the original 1985 comedy’s co-writer, Bob Gale, and the show will be directed by Tony Award winner John Rando--known for his work on Urinetown and On the Town. The show is already eyeing the West End, and although a theatre is yet to be confirmed, we’ll let you know updates as soon as we have them.
