In the next few weeks, Broadway fans will be able to experience the thrill of a live musical performance from the comfort of their own couch or with popcorn in hand at a Kansas City area cinema.

First up on your TV or smaller screen is Holiday Inn, The New Irving Berlin Musical, livestreamed by the one-year-old BroadwayHD online theater streaming service. The musical, which opened on Broadway last fall, will be captured live on 14 high-definition cameras at Roundabout Theatre Co.’s Studio 54. The live stream begins at 7 p.m. CT on Saturday, Jan. 14.

Holiday Inn tells the story of Jim, who leaves the bright lights of show business behind to settle down in his farmhouse in Connecticut, but life just isn’t the same without a bit of song and dance. Jim’s luck takes a spectacular turn when he meets Linda, a spirited schoolteacher with talent to spare. Together they turn the farmhouse into a fabulous inn with sensational performances to celebrate each holiday, from Thanksgiving to the Fourth of July. But when Jim’s best friend, Ted, tries to lure Linda away to be his new dance partner in Hollywood, will Jim be able to salvage his latest chance at love?

Then, in mid-February, theatre fans can get off the couch and head to one of five local movie theaters for the first U.S. broadcast of Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical. The performance, shot onstage in Los Angeles last fall, features several members of the original Broadway cast including Tony Award® nominee Jeremy Jordan, Kara Lindsay, Ben Fankhauser and Andrew Keenan-Bolger.

Newsies was inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899,” when Kid Blink led a band of orphan and runaway newsies on a two-week-long action against Pulitzer, Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers. The musical won 2012 Tony Awards for Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli) and Best Original Score (Alan Menken and Jack Feldman).

Fathom Events will broadcast the musical at more than 700 U.S. theaters on three dates: Feb. 16 at 7 p.m., Feb. 18 at 12:55 p.m., and Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Participating metro area movie theaters are:

  • AMC Barrywoods 24 in the Northland
  • AMC Independence Commons 20
  • AMC Studio 28 in Olathe
  • AMC Town Center 20 in Leawood
  • Cinemark 20 in Merriam
