Pretty as a Picture for Plein Air Event

CATEGORY: Starlight

It’s been said that a picture paints a thousand words. If that’s true, then the artists who spent two days painting 28 portraits of Starlight Theatre in mid-September generated 28,000 words!

Starlight’s landscaping was in full bloom and the weather was ideal when about 20 Kansas City area artists set up their easels and canvases to capture their personal perspectives of Starlight’s architecture and grounds. They were participating in the Sept. 11-12 Summit Art Plein Air Event organized by Summit Arts president Barbara Todd in cooperation with Starlight’s operations and marketing departments.

The artists created their visions of Starlight in oil, watercolor and pen and ink. Some captured the full view of Starlight from surrounding spaces in Swope Park, while others captured details of the Helzberg Fountain, historic light bridge and towers, landscaping and more. At the conclusion of the second day, Brian Hearn, an art museum curator and collection manager, judged the submitted works of art.

The winners were:

  • Best in Show: “Starlight in Watercolor” by Liz Vargas
  • 1st Place: “Distant View” by Marcia Williams
  • 2nd Place: “Starlight Foliage” by Vanessa Lacy
  • Honorable Mention: “Encore” by R. Gregory Summers

All 28 paintings are currently displayed in the Starlight administrative offices and the Steadman Board Room. They are available for purchase from the artists.
