SpongeBob, Undercover Boss, Blue Star Awards and Summer: The Donna Summer Musical

On this week’s episode, a sponge that lives in a pineapple tops the Tony Nominations, Idina Menzel goes undercover, Starlight honors the best in high school musicals in the Kansas City area and Summer works hard for the money on the Today Show.

Mean Girls and SpongBob SquarePants The Musical tied for the lead in number of nominations with twelve each, joining The Band’s Visit and Frozen in the coveted Best Musical category. My Fair Lady, Once On This Island and Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel also snagged nominations, including Best Musical Revival. Hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban, the 2018 Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on June 10 and will be broadcast on CBS starting at 7 p.m.

Tony winner Idina Menzel is set to go undercover in the new series, Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition. The Tony winner will join athletes, models and business legends as they go incognito to find deserving individuals who have yet to be discovered and help them achieve their dreams. Menzel's episode will air on CBS on Friday, May 18th.

In late April, area high school theatre students and instructors received the good news that they had earned nominations for Starlight Theatre’s annual Blue Star Awards. This year, a record 54 schools participated and produced 59 musicals, and on April 26 Starlight representatives delivered 132 nominations throughout the metro. Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Blue Star Awards recognize excellence and achievement in high school theatre. The company of the new Broadway musical Summer: The Donna Summer Musical recently performed one of the disco queen’s hits on The Today Show. The new bio-musical stars three actresses as Donna Summer, each during different points in her life, and features more than 20 of the diva’s hits. The production is currently playing at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway.
