The National High School Musical Theatre Awards™ (the Jimmy Awards) celebrate the best of the best in high school music theatre from across the nation. The 12th annual Jimmy Awards ceremony, presented by The Broadway League Foundation, was scheduled to take place in June 2020. The 2020 event, however, was cancelled in response to COVID-19 concerns.
Every year, Starlight Theatre sends its Blue Star Award winners for Outstanding Actor and Actress in a Lead Role to New York City to compete. Starlight's two students compete against other high schools students from across the United States for Best Performance by an Actor and Actress, as well as other honors and scholarships. In addition to the awards ceremony, students participate in a nine-day professional training intensive with notable theatre professionals.
Since their inception in 2009, the National High School Musical Theatre Awards have granted students more than $1 million in university and conservatory scholarships. Several competitors have already been cast in Broadway, touring and West End productions.
Starlight applauds Southwest Airlines for their generous sponsorship of the National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Southwest's support gives two talented Kansas City high school students the incredible opportunity to learn, grow and explore opportunities as aspiring Broadway performers.
