Starlight Stars
The Starlight Stars program is structured to develop and hone the skills of high school performers.
Since 2003, this educational program has prepared company members to pursue arts careers, with alumni performing across the country and abroad. Selected students:
- Strengthen their resumes
- Cultivate skills
- Network with industry professionals
- Gain experience in a variety of performance styles
- Are eligible to audition for Starlight productions
- Become part of the Starlight community
The program’s activities take place throughout the summer, with additional fall and winter opportunities. This summer’s sessions will take place in-person, following COVID-19 safety guidelines. Company members receive access to master classes and industry-insider workshops. Scholarship applications available upon request.

Stars create a musical theatre medley that they perform at Starlight prior to select Broadway performances and while representing Starlight at multiple community events. Company members receive access to master classes and industry workshops. During all indoor sessions and rehearsals, students and all Starlight staff will be required to wear masks. For any outdoor sessions or performances, masking will be based on the comfort level of the student.
Two separate audition sessions are offered. Those auditioning need only attend one of the sessions.
Who
Students in grades 8 through 11 during the current school year (2021/2022) may audition.
When
Session #1
Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m. Required arrival time for check-in is 6:45 p.m.
Session #2
Sunday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. Required arrival time for check-in is 1:45 p.m.
We will move as quickly as possible, but we cannot guarantee an end time for either session. With this information in mind, any issues this may cause must be addressed with Starlight’s Community Engagement Department prior to the audition date.
RSVP Instructions
An RSVP is required to audition*. Please email education@kcstarlight.com with the following information prior to your chosen date:
- requested audition date
- student name
- current grade level
- parent/guardian name
- phone number of at least one parent/guardian
We will confirm receipt of each audition RSVP.
Items to Prepare
Those auditioning must complete a vocal and group dance audition. Audition requirements are as follows:
- Memorize 32 bars of a Broadway musical piece that shows off your vocal range. Starlight will provide an accompanist.
- Wear clothes and shoes suitable for a group dance audition; tennis shoes are acceptable. Students will not be allowed to be barefoot or in only socks during the dance call.
Items to Bring to the Audition
Sheet music accurately marked with the start/stop of the 32-bar cut and in the correct key, as the accompanist will not transpose

Cost
For those selected, the cost of the program, including all master classes and industry workshops with theatre professionals, is $400.
Two full scholarships will be available for the program based on financial need. The scholarship application is available upon request. To receive a scholarship, the student must audition and be cast in the troupe. The application deadline is May 23. Additionally, a payment plan can be set up.

Starlight Gala
Members of the Starlight Stars and Starlight Stars of Tomorrow may be invited to perform as part of Starlight’s Gala on Saturday, October 1, 2022. Their participation will be dependent upon final event needs. Participation will be optional, with students being notified as early as possible. Rehearsal details will be finalized closer to the event and communicated prior to asking for a commitment.
Holiday Medley Performances
Members of the Starlight Stars and Starlight Stars of Tomorrow will have the opportunity to participate in November/December holiday performances (6 to 8 anticipated). Starlight Stars will be required to “opt in” by Monday, August 1. A 15-minute holiday medley will be performed throughout Kansas City at venues like Union Station and Crown Center. For those participants not opting in, the holiday medley rehearsals listed on this document will not be required. Holiday medley rehearsals are:

Sunday, October 9; 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 16; 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Master classes with cast members from Starlight’s Broadway season will be scheduled throughout the summer. The days/times of these sessions are yet to be finalized with the tours, but below is our requested schedule. Participation in these master classes is optional.
Hairspray – Thursday, June 9; 1:30-3:00 p.m.
Anastasia – Wednesday, August 10; 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Sister Act – Saturday, August 20; 2:30-4:00 p.m.
