On this week’s episode, the Drama League holds the Gratitude Awards, a variety of new Broadway cast recordings have been released, and Playbill searches for a star.
The Drama League's Gratitude Awards Stream April 30
On Thursday, April 30, the Drama League presented the first-ever Gratitude Awards. Streamed on Facebook and Youtube, the program was a digital fundraiser for the Ghost Light Campaign, which was created to support directors during the COVID-19 crisis. The Gratitude Awards included an evening of speeches from Broadway stars like Idina Menzel and Aaron Tiv-eight, and other industry professionals like teachers, press agents, show dressers and more. Meant to bring hope and solace during these unprecedented times, the Gratitude Awards honored positive spirit, imagination and resiliency during these unprecedented times.
New Broadway Cast Recordings
We may not be able to enjoy musical theatre in person quite yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t jam to cast recordings in the meantime. A number of shows have recently released original albums, studio albums and concept albums. A few of our favorites include Sing Street, the musical based on the 2016 John Carney movie, and The Prince of Egypt, based on the 1998 Dreamworks film. Although a date hasn’t been announced, we’re also looking forward to the release of Girl From the North Country, the Broadway musical featuring the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan.
Are You the Next Broadway Star?
Could you be the next Broadway star? Inspired by all of the incredible talent that’s been shared virtually, Playbill decided to host a “casting call” with Playbill’s Search for A Star. All that’s required is a digital submission singing the song of your choice. One winner will be chosen to receive a professional headshot package, a guest appearance on Playbill’s Instagram live, two tickets to a Broadway show of their choice and more. Industry professionals will judge each video submission and select entries will be posted on Playbill. For details on how to submit your entry, visit playbill.com. And break a leg!
