August at Starlight Theatre delivers tunes you know and love plus unique theatrical experiences as The Bodyguard and Motown The Musical light up the night! It won’t be easy to resist the urge to dance in the aisles and sing along to all of the catchy, classic tunes featured in the two hit musicals taking the Starlight stage this month.

Playing now and making its Kansas City debut through Sunday, Aug. 13 is The Bodyguard, based on the 1992 Warner Bros. film of the same name. Grammy Award-nominated R&B/pop artist Deborah Cox headlines as superstar Rachel Marron alongside TV/film actor Judson Mills, who plays the ex-Secret-Service agent-turned-bodyguard hired to protect her from an unknown stalker. The story is elevated by the show’s multitude of favorite songs, including “Run to You,” “I Have Nothing,” “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” and one of the greatest-selling songs of all time, “I Will Always Love You.”

A romantic thriller, The Bodyguard premiered in London’s West End in 2012 and has since performed worldwide. It was nominated for four Laurence Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical, and won Best New Musical at the Whatsonstage Awards.

Later in August, Motown The Musical takes the Starlight stage and transports audiences back to a golden age of music. Based upon the life story of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. and the artists he discovered and catapulted to fame, this original musical lifts audiences with both its music (more than 60 Motown hits!) and stories of triumph during the Civil Rights era. Motown The Musical brims with memorable music from favorite artists of the 1960s and ‘70s, including Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson, all of whom appear as principal characters in the show.

Motown the Musical debuted on Broadway in 2013 and received four Tony Award nominations. Experience the true story behind America’s soundtrack Aug. 22-27.
