PIPPIN Shines on ‘CBS Sunday Morning’

CATEGORY: Broadway

The new and highly acclaimed national touring production of PIPPIN was the subject of an action-packed feature Jan. 4 on “CBS Sunday Morning.” The video segment took viewers behind the scenes of the production as cast members rehearsed in preparation for the tour’s opening in Denver last September.

Sure to be a highlight of the 2015 Broadway season, PIPPIN comes to Starlight for six performances on June 30-July 5. A fireworks display will immediately follow the Fourth of July show. Kansas City is one of 25 stops on the show’s North American Tour.

The musical is directed by Diane Paulus and features an all-star cast led by Broadway veterans Sasha Allen, who also was a finalist on TV’s “The Voice,” and John Rubinstein as Pippin’s father, King Charlemagne. Rubinstein’s story is particularly interesting because he actually starred as Pippin in the show’s original run on Broadway in 1972. In the ‘CBS Sunday Morning’ segment, Rubinstein sings “Corner of the Sky” 42 years after originating it on Broadway.

With a beloved score by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), PIPPIN tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his existence. The new production features sizzling choreography in the style of Bob Fosse and breathtaking acrobatics.

The tour follows the 2013 production of PIPPIN on Broadway, which took home four Tony Awards® including Best Revival of a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (Diane Paulus), Best Actress in a Musical (Patina Miller) and Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Andrea Martin).
