Know the Show: Mean Girls

Starlight’s 2025 AdventHealth Broadway Series begins next week! The first show in this year’s season is Mean Girls, a story of the ups and downs of high school friendships.

The musical focuses on Cady Heron, a teenage girl who transfers to a public school after being homeschooled her whole life while living in Africa. At school, she befriends outsiders Janis Sarkasian and Damian Hubbard who persuade her to infiltrate the “Plastics,” a clique of wealthy but insecure girls comprised of Gretchen Wieners, sweet but dimwitted Karen Smith, and the charming but ruthless Regina George.

When Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung.

The Music

Mean Girls features a high-energy pop/rock score blending humor, teenage angst, and heartfelt moments.

The stage is set with a trio of tunes. “A Cautionary Tale” is sung by Janis and Damian, Cady’s first friends at the new school. It’s a cheeky introduction that warns the audience about the drama that’s about to unfold.

“Where Do You Belong” is a fun, Broadway-style number that presents Cady and the audience to North Shore High’s various social cliques. Finally, “Meet the Plastics” highlights the popular girls including Regina George.

Other notable songs include “Apex Predator,” a dark and edgy song about power dynamics; “Revenge Party,” a fast-paced, mischievous song plotting Regina’s downfall; and the showstopping villain song by Regina “World Burn.” Mean Girls ends on a positive note with “I See Stars,” a warm, optimistic group number about growth, unity, and forgiveness.
