CATEGORY: Engage

Since its inception of the Broadway series in 1951, Starlight has collaborated with hundreds of local community partners to ensure that all Kansas Citians can enjoy, support, and participate in the arts through the Community Tickets program. This year, Starlight Theatre has partnered with 168 organizations to provide thousands of children and adults with the opportunity to experience the thrill of professional live theatre at no cost.

Starlight offers 364 free tickets to every Broadway performance of the season and serves over 20 counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Individuals receiving Community Tickets are also connected to Starlight’s many accessibility resources, such as ADA-accessible seating, sign language interpretation, assisted listening devices, and audio-described performances.

Karrie Duke, The Chief Development Officer for the Center for the Developmentally Disabled, said the members of her organization benefit in many different ways from Starlight’s Community Tickets program.

“The Starlight Community Tickets program has allowed residents with developmental disabilities to attend and enjoy shows with other members of the community,” said Duke. “This engagement not only allows them to get out of the house and do something fun, but it also stimulates their senses and improves their mental and behavioral health.”

Participants in the Community Tickets program include but are not limited to neighborhood associations, schools, social service agencies, and health service providers.
